Details Make the Difference

Nov 07, 2014

Choosing a roofing contractor can be a big and confusing task.  When you are making your choice, your roofer should be covering all of the details, not cutting any corners to save money, insuring the longest life of your roof possible.  In the end, the cheapest roof will probably be the most costly.

Proper Ventilation and Venting

Simply, if your attic is not ventilated properly, your roof will not last as long as it should.  This is one important detail many roofing contractors fail to address, therefore, not giving the customer the longest life of their roof possible.

An attic without adequate ventilation will have issues in all seasons.  In cold weather, warm air generated by heating sources, laundry, showers, and everyday activities can cause moisture buildup in the attic. Trapped heat and moisture can cause ice dams, dry rot, higher energy costs and even structural damage.

In the summer, heat buildup in the attic can encourage premature deterioration in the roof decking and shingles (if used).  Unwanted heat can also transfer into living areas, making it uncomfortable and reducing energy efficiency.

These problems can also occur if venting from bathrooms and kitchens lead into your attic space rather than the outdoors.  Although this used to be a common practice, we now know that this will contribute to moisture issues, mold, wet insulation (lowering its R-value) and a shorter roof life.

Schedule a Ledegar ventilation and attic inspection to put your mind at ease if you have any concerns.  Our full service maintenance department can detect and correct issues caused by “cheap” work or by

contractors that didn’t pay attention to the important details.
